How to Rotate a PDF and Save It Permanently
You open a PDF, the pages are sideways, you click "rotate" and everything looks fine. Then you send the file and the recipient sees it sideways again. This happens because many PDF viewers only rotate the view, not the file. Here is how to make rotation stick.
View rotation vs. saved rotation
Browsers and simple PDF readers usually have a rotate button for convenience. It turns the page on your screen while you read. When you close the file, nothing has changed. To fix a document for good, the new rotation must be saved in the PDF itself.
Rotate and save online

- Open Rotate PDF and choose your file. Thumbnails of every page appear.
- Click a page to turn it 90° clockwise. Click again for 180° or 270°.
- To rotate the whole document, use Rotate all left or Rotate all right.
- Click Save rotated PDF.
The new file opens correctly in every PDF reader, on any phone or computer.
Rotate and save on a Mac
In Preview, select the page thumbnails, use Tools → Rotate Left or Rotate Right, then choose File → Save (or Export as PDF to keep the original). Preview saves the rotation into the file.
How rotation is stored
Each page in a PDF has a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Readers use it to decide how to display the page. Changing this value is instant and does not touch the page's text or images, which is why rotating does not reduce quality or change the file size.
Rotating only some pages
Mixed documents, such as a report with one wide landscape table, often need only one or two pages turned. In Rotate PDF, click only those pages. Pages you do not click keep their orientation.
What rotation cannot fix
- Slightly tilted scans. Rotation works in 90° steps only. A page scanned at a small angle needs to be rescanned or straightened in a scanning app.
- Mirrored pages. A page that reads backwards is mirrored, not rotated, and must be recreated.
Prevent sideways pages next time
- Place paper the same way each time on the scanner glass.
- When scanning with a phone, lock screen rotation and hold the phone in portrait.
- Check the preview in your scanning app before saving.
Combine after rotating
If you are preparing several files, rotate each one first, then use Merge PDF. The rotation is kept in the merged document.
