How to Reorder Pages in a PDF (Free, No Software)
Pages in the wrong order are a common problem with scans, exported reports and documents assembled from several sources. You do not need a PDF editor to fix it. Page ranges let you rebuild a PDF in any order you like.
The idea
Our Split PDF tool, in Extract pages into one PDF mode, creates a new PDF from the pages you type, in the order you type them. To reorder, simply list the pages in the new order.
Step by step
- Open Split PDF and choose your file.
- Keep the mode on Extract pages into one PDF.
- Type the pages in the order you want.
- Click Split PDF to download the reordered file.
Examples
| Goal | Pages | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Move the last page to the front | 8 | 8, 1-7 |
| Swap pages 2 and 3 | 5 | 1, 3, 2, 4-5 |
| Reverse a whole document | 4 | 4, 3, 2, 1 |
| Put chapter 2 (pages 11–20) before chapter 1 (pages 1–10) | 20 | 11-20, 1-10 |
| Interleave fronts (1–3) and backs (4–6) | 6 | 1, 4, 2, 5, 3, 6 |
Tip: plan with a quick list
For longer documents, open the PDF and write down the current page number of each section in the order you want them. Then type that list. It is faster and less error-prone than moving pages one by one.
Reordering whole files
If the parts of your document are separate files, use Merge PDF, which lets you drag the files into any order before combining them.
On a Mac
Preview can also reorder pages: open the PDF, show thumbnails with View → Thumbnails, drag pages to their new position, then save. For very long documents, typing a page list is usually quicker.
Does reordering affect quality?
No. Pages are copied exactly as they are. Text remains selectable and images are unchanged. The original file is not modified; you get a new copy.
Summary
To reorder a PDF, type the pages in the order you want into Split PDF's extract mode. Use Merge PDF when the pieces are separate files.
