How to Combine Multiple Scanned Pages Into One PDF
Many scanners and copiers save each page as its own file: scan001.jpg, scan002.jpg, or a separate PDF for every page. To send a multi-page document, you need to put them back together. The method depends on the file type your scanner produced.
If your scans are images (JPG or PNG)
- Open Image to PDF.
- Select all the scan images at once. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) to select several, or Shift to select a range.
- Check the order shown in the previews and fix it with the arrow buttons.
- Choose A4 or US Letter so every page has a standard size, and set the margin to None for scans.
- Click Create PDF.
If your scans are separate PDF files
- Open Merge PDF.
- Add all the scan PDFs.
- Arrange them in order and click Merge PDFs.
Keeping pages in the right order
Scanners usually number files in the order they were scanned (scan001, scan002…). File pickers sort these correctly as long as the numbers have the same number of digits. Problems appear with names like scan1, scan2… scan10, which some systems sort as 1, 10, 2. If that happens, rename the files with leading zeros (01, 02… 10) or simply check the order in the preview before converting.
Double-sided documents
When you scan both sides of a stack using a single-sided scanner, you often get all the fronts first and then all the backs, sometimes in reverse order. Two ways to handle it:
- With images, reorder them manually in Image to PDF before converting.
- With a PDF of fronts and a PDF of backs, merge them, then use Split PDF in extract mode to reorder pages, for example
1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8for a 5+5 page scan.
Fix sideways pages
If a page was fed the wrong way, open the finished PDF in Rotate PDF, click that page and save.
Keeping the file size reasonable
Scanning at 600 DPI in color creates huge files. For ordinary documents, 150–200 DPI in grayscale is sharp and readable. If your combined PDF is too large, see how to make a PDF smaller.
Save time next time
Most scanners and scanner apps have an option such as "multi-page PDF" or "save as one file". Turning it on makes the scanner combine pages for you. Phone scanner apps usually do this automatically when you scan several pages in one session.
Summary
Image scans go into Image to PDF; PDF scans go into Merge PDF. Check the order, fix any rotation, and you have a single, clean document ready to send.
