How to Merge PDF Files on Android Without Installing an App

By the PDFToolkitX team · Published October 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Unlike iPhones, most Android phones do not include a built-in way to combine PDF files. Many people install a PDF app from the Play Store, but these apps often come with ads, subscriptions or requests for access to all your files. For an occasional merge, your web browser is a simpler choice.

Merge PDFs in Chrome on Android

  1. Open Chrome and go to pdftoolkitx.com/merge-pdf.html.
  2. Tap Choose PDF files. Android shows a file picker; tap the menu (☰) to switch between Downloads, Google Drive and other storage.
  3. Select your PDFs. On most phones you can touch and hold the first file to select several at once.
  4. Arrange them with the ↑ and ↓ buttons.
  5. Tap Merge PDFs. The new file, merged.pdf, is saved to your Downloads.

The tool runs inside the browser, so your files are processed on your phone and not uploaded to a server.

Where to find the merged PDF

Open the Files app (called "Files by Google", "My Files" on Samsung, or "File Manager" on other brands) and look in the Downloads folder. Chrome also shows a "Download complete" message with an Open button right after the merge.

Merging files from Google Drive or WhatsApp

  • Google Drive: in the file picker, choose Drive from the side menu and select the files directly.
  • WhatsApp: documents received in WhatsApp are stored on your phone. Open the document in WhatsApp, use the share or menu button and choose to save or share it to Files, then pick it from Downloads.
  • Gmail: tap the download icon on each attachment first. They will appear in Downloads.

Tips for a better result

  • Check the order before merging. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the PDF.
  • Remove extra pages first with Split PDF, for example blank backs of scanned pages.
  • Use Wi-Fi only for loading the page. After the page has loaded, the merge itself uses no data, because nothing is uploaded.
  • Close other apps if you are merging many large scans. Phones with little memory can slow down with very large files.

What about Samsung and other brands?

Some manufacturers include PDF features in their own apps, and these change from model to model. If your phone's file manager offers a merge option, it is fine to use. The browser method has the advantage of working the same on every Android phone, as well as on tablets, Chromebooks and computers.

Common problems

"Some files were skipped"

Only PDF files can be merged. If a document is a photo, convert it with Image to PDF first.

A file will not open

Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged until the password is removed by whoever created the file.

Summary

You do not need an app to merge PDFs on Android. Open the Merge PDF tool in Chrome, pick your files, set the order and download one combined file. It is free, works on any phone and keeps your documents on your device.
