How to Split a PDF and Remove Pages Without Special Software
Long PDFs are often more than you need. You may want to send only one chapter of a report, remove the blank back sides of a scan, or separate a stack of invoices that were scanned together. All of these are "split" tasks, and they can be done in a browser without installing any software.
Understanding page ranges
Most split tools, including our Split PDF tool, use page ranges. Once you know the notation, every split task becomes simple.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
5 | Only page 5 |
2-4 | Pages 2, 3 and 4 |
1, 3, 5 | Pages 1, 3 and 5 |
10- | Page 10 to the last page |
-3 | Page 1 to page 3 |
1-3, 8-10 | Pages 1 to 3 and 8 to 10 |
Pages are added to the new file in the order you type them, which means you can also reorder pages with the same tool.
Task 1: Extract a few pages
Suppose a 40-page contract only needs pages 12 to 15 to be signed. Choose the PDF, select Extract pages into one PDF, type 12-15 and click Split. You get a 4-page file to send.
Task 2: Delete pages
To delete pages, extract everything except them. To remove page 4 and pages 9 to 10 from a 12-page document, type 1-3, 5-8, 11-12. The result is the original file without those pages.
Task 3: Reorder pages
If the signature page should come first, type it first: for example 6, 1-5. For complex reordering, it can be easier to extract groups of pages into separate files and then put them back together with Merge PDF.
Task 4: Separate a batch scan
Office scanners often produce one big PDF from a stack of paper. If every document in the stack is one page, choose Every page as its own PDF. If every document is two pages (for example a form with a back side), choose Split every N pages and enter 2. The tool creates a ZIP with one file per document.
Task 5: Make a file small enough to send
If a PDF is too big to attach to an email, splitting it into parts is a simple, reliable solution. Split a 30 MB report every 50 pages, and send the parts in separate emails. For other approaches, see how to reduce PDF size.
Does splitting change the content?
No. The selected pages are copied into the new files as they are. Text remains searchable, links to websites keep working, and images are not re-compressed. The original PDF is not modified at all: you always receive new files.
Common questions
Why is the extracted file almost as big as the original?
Fonts and images that are used on many pages are stored only once in a PDF. When you extract a few pages, those shared resources still need to be included, so a small extract can be larger than expected. This is normal.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not until the password protection is removed. This is a deliberate limit of PDF encryption, not of the tool.
What about page numbers printed on the pages?
Printed page numbers are part of the page content, so an extract that starts at page 12 will still show "12" at the bottom. If you need new numbering, it has to be added in the original document.
Summary
Page ranges are the key to splitting. With one notation you can extract, delete, reorder and divide pages. Keep the original file, work on the new copies, and check the result before sending.
